I'd say [Ultrasone Signature PRO is] more in between the Edition 9 and Edition 8. It has highs and mids more akin to the Edition 9, but the lower end seems more like the Edition 8 to my ears. It's punchy but not as cavernous as the Edition 9. Overall the Signature Pro shares the Edition 8's more linear and uncolored** sound.
**Uncolored for Ultrasone, anyway. The Signature Pro is much closer to the Editions than the PRO line.

Ultrasone's plastic headphones may look cheep when compared to the Edition line, but they're actually really durable now-a-days (since they fixed the headband issue). The point of the Signature Pro seems to be offering Edition-level sound in a package that is sturdier and less extravagant looking.
I'm hoping they'll sound more like the Edition 9 than the Edition 8, personally.

To that end, the Signature PRO is not a glamorous looking headphone like the newer Editions. The shape is actually a very common OEM design that Ultrasone has been using for quite a while, and aside from the headband, there's nothing new really. It's the same shape that's been used with the Edition 7, Edition 9, and the HFI series, albeit beefed up in certain spots and sporting a more rugged plastic from the PRO series.
It seems Ultrasone is putting sound quality and usability first ahead of "luxury" for the Signature PRO.
I'm definitely preferring these to the Edition 8 so far.

I find them more comfortable than the Edition 8 personally. The shape of the earpads on the 8s makes them feel a bit awkward on the ears for me, whereas the Signature Pro has more ovoid pads like the Edition 9. The Signature Pro also has a one-sided detachable cable, whereas the Edition 8's double sided cable with small Y split is irritating to me at times.

I feel the tonal balance of the Signature Pro is fairly neutral for an Ultrasone. It will probably be closer to the Edition 8 than the PRO 900 in this regard. I prefer it to the Edition 8 however as it lacks its top-end glare. I've heard the PRO 900 without a Kees-type mod is quite sibilant, and I find the PRO 2900 to be pretty sibilant too. The Edition 8 is less sibilant, but it can still creep up now and then on certain recordings. The Signature Pro has no sibilance problems at all to my ears.
I'm still trying to figure out the extent of the Signature Pro's bass response. It seems fairly close to the Edition 8's at the moment. Less plentiful than the Edition 9.

Personally, I find the Signature PROs sound just fine with any genre, not just a limited few. Also fine with female vocals. Not sure if Gwarmi just has different preferences, but these sound pretty neutral to me vs. Gwarmi's impressions (not hearing quite the bass emphasis), so maybe it's an issue with production variation (an earlier prototype?). I'd be curious to hear Gwarmi's impressions when he tries a second pair at a retailer.
If given the choice personally, I'd take the Signature PRO over the Edition 8. I just prefer it now because it offers the same over all balanced sound without the slightly harsher upper registers of the Edition 8.

IMO I don't believe ultrasone produced such a un- Ultrasone-like HP, it sound quite different from pro line and ED8(I've heard ED8 only once, and that was just opened from the box)
The problem is there's a range of what can be considered a "neutral headphone," and depending on one's frame of reference, something on the fringes of neutral for one person could be easily construed as not by another. For me, it's a lot easier and more beneficial to say that the Signature Pro is, by Ultrasone's standards (based on their other headphones), one of their most neutral sounding headphones.
People like to summarize the output of a particular headphone manufacturer as being a "house sound" often times, and while I think it validly applies in some cases (Audez'e, Denon), I think it's an over simplification in others (Audio-Technica, Sony). With Ultrasone, the stereotype tends to be a massive bottom-end, detailed mids, often sharp, painful highs. The Edition 8 fits this stereotype better than the Signature PRO, but both are more refined overall compared to the PRO models.
In other words, the Signature PRO is not so stereotypically 'Ultrasone' to my mind, especially compared to their recent directions with the Edition 8 and Edition 10. The Edition 9 to my mind epitomizes the pinnacle of the 'old' Ultrasone, their other sound that is smoother and not as strident. The Signature PRO then occupies a mid point of sorts between the Edition 9 and Edition 8, their old ways and new ways.
