“When recording, the ideal is to capture a performance so that the highest possible sound quality can be recovered from the archive. While an archive has no hard limit on the quantity of data assignable to that information, in distribution the data deliverable depends on application-specific factors such as storage, bandwidth or legacy compatibility. Recent interest in high-resolution digital audio has been accompanied by a trend to higher and higher sampling rates and bit depths, yet the sound quality improvements show diminishing returns and so fail to reconcile human auditory capability with the information capacity of the channel. By bringing together advances in sampling theory with recent findings in human auditory science, our approach aims to deliver extremely high sound quality through a hierarchical distribution chain where sample rate and bit depth can vary at each link but where the overall system is managed from end-to-end, including the converters. Our aim is an improved time/frequency balance in a high-performance chain whose errors, from the perspective of the human listener, are equivalent to no more than those introduced by sound traveling a short distance through air.”

"The implications for the music industry and hi-fi manufacturers alike could potentially be huge, it the format garners enough industry support. In attendance at the event were senior executives from Sony Music, Universal and Warner. Mike Jbar, CEO of the Warner Music Group said interest in the format was already being driven by artists. “For the creative community this is kind of jaw dropping. It could be argued that we’ve been stagnant as an industry when it comes to introducing new experiences. MQA will introduce a lot of new creativity.”

The small file size offered by MQA, which can be streamed at just 1m/bit a second, could also transform streaming music services, says the brand. Bob Stuart told Inside CI that it was key to have music industry support. “What we don’t need is format wars or confusion, we all need to be on the same side,” he says.

One early adopter of the technology will be Arcam. MD Charlie Brennan told Inside CI, that while firmware updates could be used to make players compatible, Arcam was already working on a hardware decoding solution. “It’s just the best way to maximise performance. We’ll be looking to have a product ready for launch sometime in the summer of 2015.”
David Mugford, UK sales manager for Onkyo Europe, was equally enthusiastic. He told Inside CI: “It’s just awesome! We first heard MQA some time ago and were blown away. You can definitely expect to see Onkyo MQA enabled hardware from us soon.” Currently there is no confirmed details on the availability of MQA-encoded software, however online music giant 7digital was in attendance and is know to be a supporter."

"Just how this works and the magnitude of improvement in terms of bandwidth and storage capacity is described in the AES paper, “A Hierarchical Approach to Archiving and Distribution” authored by Robert Stuart and Peter Craven. The bottom line on the distribution system is that a 192 kHz/24-bit original requiring 9.2 Mbps can be “encapsulated” using an average data rate of 922 kbps, which is well below the rate of a stereo 44.1 kHz/16-bit compact disc!Getting high-resolution audio fidelity down to bitrates associated with CDs is quite a feat. From the discussion that Robert gave at the AES convention in Los Angeles, a careful reading of the previously mentioned paper, and the discussions/videos available on the Meridian website, I think I have a pretty good handle on MQA."

"Meridian looked at a lot of these amplitude vs. frequency plots and said, “Why don’t we try to encode just the signal part of the music and ignore the empty space?” Instead of having a rectangular frequency vs. amplitude box generating large amount of data…much of which is empty…they came up with a system that focuses on just the audio. Of course, there’s a lot more to it than just using filter to remove the blank part of the plot, but this is a key component of the MQA technology. They call this “structured encoding” and “encapsulation filtering”.In the final paragraphs of the AES paper, they “recommend that modern digital recordings should employ a wideband encoding system which places specific emphasis on time and frequency and sampling at no less than 384 kHz."

[/h]LAS VEGAS—Allow me to preface this by saying this is my opinion and not that of TechHive or PCWorld as whole, since I was the only editor there and Tuesday was the first day of the show.
With that out of the way, it will be hard to top the product demo that Meridian Audio put on for me yesterday. Meridian has an impressive track record for developing high-resolution audio-encoding technology. It developed one of the two mandatory codecs used in Blu-ray discs (they licensed the technology that became Dolby Pro HD), and they developed the codec used in SACD (Super Audio Compact Disc). To my ears, its MQA technology is even more impressive—and not just because of the sound quality.
