The network audio player fails to connect to a wireless network. What can be done to troubleshoot this?
Answer
This could be caused by a variety of different things. We'll start with some basics.
If you're using WEP encryption:
Double check (possibly triple check if you're using 128-bit WEP) that you are entering your WEP key correctly. One incorrect or misplaced character will cause a failure to connect.
Ensure that you're using the first key in the router's setup if it lets you specify multiple keys
If your router has an option for this, try switching the authentication type (e.g. from shared key to open system or vice versa) to see if that helps
If you're using an ASCII password on your router and need to convert it to hex, you can do so at this web site.
If you're using WPA encryption:
Double, possibly triple check that the password is entered correctly in your SB2/SB3 setup. One incorrect or misplaced character, or a space where there shouldn't be one will cause a failure.
If you're using WPA2 with AES cipher, try changing your router/AP to use WPA1 with TKIP cipher instead and see if that works.
If you're using WPA1 (aka WPA Personal or WPA-PSK) ensure that the cipher is set to TKIP and not AES in your wireless router/AP setup.
Keep in mind that WPA passwords are case sensitive and must be between 8 and 64 characters in length.
In general:
If your router supports a 108mbps or higher 'turbo g', 'super g' or 'g nitro' mode, try disabling it and see if that helps.
If this is a Squeezebox2 or 3, ensure that the MAC address of the SB in view current settings on the main setup menu matches the one printed on the bottom of the label (if it doesn't, press right to change it back to the factory assigned one)
Ensure that your router or access point has the most recent firmware version available. This sometimes makes a huge difference, not only in connectivity but often times in performance as well.
If possible try resetting the router and the Squeezebox to factory default and see if that helps. to reset the Squeezebox, unplug the power and hold down the ADD(+) button on the remote while plugging the power back in.
If you find that there are several (over 3 or 4 or so) networks within range, try changing the channel in your router or access point's setup. This may help as well.
If you are still having trouble, please open a support incident with some details about your setup, including:
What make and model of wireless router or access point you are using, including what hardware and firmware version.
If you are using multiple routers or access points, more detail about how everything is configured.
What type of encryption you are using, what encryption strength, cipher type, etc... (basically any setting on your router/AP related to encryption)
What model of Slim Devices player you are using and what firmware version it currently has installed on it.
What version of SlimServer you are using."
