Testvinneren Western Electric 91E - "BIG, BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL"
"STEREO+ MENER: En forsterker
laget av og for folk med lidenskapelig
forhold til lyd, musikk og
elektronikk."
"Konklusjon

“This unit is groundbreaking…”
“The Western Electric 91E is a unique combination of ‘old and new.’ The heart of the unit is the WE 300B tube, which is made—right here in the U.S.A. by WE—to the same standards and specifications as the original WE 300B tube, with some enhancements to the manufacturing process that increase the tube’s longevity. The amplifier also blends an old circuit design (Class A2) for driving the grid of the tube with new innovative circuits like the patented SCCS (Steered Constant Current Source). Reviewer Rives Bird found the result to be nothing short of magical. Leading-edge designs like the 91E are not just hyperbole. They deliver real benefits, such as 20 watts of power from a 300B in single-ended triode (SET) mode. The 91E offers all the sonic benefits of the 300B without the shortcomings: well-controlled bass, a wonderful top end, and a five-year warranty on the pair of 300B tubes. It is refreshing to see tubes being made in the U.S. again. What’s even more impressive is the commitment Charles Whitener, WE’s CEO, has made to quality and execution. This unit is groundbreaking. It delivers an incredibly high standard at a relatively affordable price. [The reviewer] was so impressed he purchased the review sample and listens to it daily.”

Stereophile:
“The 91E is not your traditional treble-and-midrange-champ SET amplifier. In delivering more strength and power without compromising the low end, it`s a classy machine that can frame music neutrally in a large soundstage. The 91E elicited consistent musical pleasure.
Western Electric is back.”

hifi-advice:
"The 91E has a remarkably solid and robust sound, not what you normally expect from a SET design. It’s also remarkably powerful for a SET design: 20 Watts instead of 7 Watts as normal for the 300B tube. This amplifier has the most powerful and impactful bass that I have heard yet from a SET amplifier using a single set of output tubes.
Dynamically, too, the 91E is rather surprising, sounding more like a big push-pull amp than a small triode. The difference is that, unlike many other push-pull tube amplifiers, and for all of its solidity and boldness, the 91E also has a seductive and gently-dosed warmth, a delightful smoothness, and an utter lack of hardness or edge even when pushed.
It’s arguably what the 300B’s are most famous for: that wondrously rich and deeply saturated midrange. The real beauty of the 91E in my view is that it blends robustness, solidity, and power with rich and deep tonal saturation and a smooth warm glow while remaining upbeat and dynamic."

Western Electric Type No.91E integrated amplifier
During my 30-odd years inhabiting New York City's Greenwich Village, I've seen many things come and go. Today's Village buzzes, blasts, and bellows in every direction, change itself the only constant.

Western Electric 91E
The 91E is a Class A, single-ended (SE), integrated amplifier that was inspired by its predecessor, the 91A. Compared to the original, the 91E offers double the power, made possible by a completely new approach to SE amplifier design.
