min testkasse) inneholder gospelopptak fra 1940-1960-tallet. Noen er i mono. Noen er utført i kirker o.l. Dette er ikke (nødvendigvis) audiofile superopptak, snarere tvert i mot. Derimot er det, til dels enkle opptak, med stor tilstedeværelse, nerve, gåsehudfaktor osv. På et (rimelig) godt oppsett kan man virkelig få følelsen av å være
der, midt blant menigheten i kirken.
På spor 15 "Said I Wasn't Gonna Tell Nobody" stopper sangen et sted etter midten, og man hører kun lyder fra menigheten. Da er man
der hvis det fungerer. Det fungerer spesielt godt med hodetelefon, for da har man menigheten rundt seg. Deretter fortsetter sangen, som forøvrig er bra. Akkompagnementet kan bli nedprioritert i.f.h.t. sangen på noen anlegg, men er klart tilstede på gode. Det er godt mulig at dette er et opptak utført med kun ett stereomikrofonoppsett.
På spor 14 "In the Upper Room" er Mahalia Jackson meget god. Første del er rolig, før de tar av til "The Upper Room" med økt tempo og driv. Jeg har møtt flere som har bitt seg merke i dette opptaket.

Although the artists were unknown to me, this is a truly a greatest hits collection of gospel in the older (30's to 50's) style. It represents choral, solo and small group work, some of the latter backed by a Hammond B3 organ. The quality of the recordings are good but the passion and excitement of the singers is truly outstanding.
For the novice, I would strongly recommend this collection.
