Videreposter her hva som kan forventes av lydlig nirvana fra Steely Dan platene, postet i går av Steve Hoffman på Steve Hoffman forum. Steve har mastret to SD album; Aja og Katy Lied.
"..Dudes (male and female), remember this: The "sound" of these old SD albums is vintage 1970's, LA Studio style, solid state gear, all tube stuff thrown out, consoles that had a lot of faders but sort of a "dumbed down" sludgy sound that engineers liked. Big, thick carpet everywhere, muffled sonics ruled the day, big bass, not much dynamic changes but a lot of dynamic drive. Recessed midrange, no big echo or reverb, subdued piano, drums with no top end as to not mess up the vocal range and so on. The Sound of the 70's, Linda R., Eagles, SD, etc.
This style of recording went out with a bang when the 80's began.
Unless you have a pair of vintage Big Westlake monitors you have NO idea what these records sound like. And since no one does, no one really knows.
But I do know this: The more lackluster and muffled the sound of your Steely Dan album, the closer to the sound of the masters you have. That lifeless, recessed sound is right on the masters.
Don't forget. If you hear that sound on your LP or CD or SACD, it's what the stuff sounds like. It's not a defect, the music was recorded and mixed that way on purpose. I have no idea what the purpose actually was but there you have it.."
