I’ve been a violinist all my life, starting with classical training at age nine, then in my twenties I played and recorded rock and roll and pop, then took up country and blues, all on the violin. Now I am into jazz, which in many ways is as complex as classical. So my answer to this very interesting question is that classical music is generally cerebral, while popular, blues, r and b, etc., is almost entirely physical, basically coming from dance music, or rhythms that inspire your body to physically move in time with the beat. Naturally, many folks who like to dance around are quite smart, but this question includes the word ‘intellectual’ which generally describes those who give more importance to complex thought, analysis, contemplation, logic, science, etc., rather than the more non-verbal tribalism of gut-level movement-based repetitive rhythms that we find in the more ‘popular’ music forms. Classical music also has long arcs of structure, which require careful concentration and sustained absorption, which for a cerebral, i.e. intellectual person, is a valuable and enriching exercise.

Why do intelligent people listen to classical music?
Answer (1 of 35): In my opinion intelligent people listen to classical music because they are able to comprehend it. Classical music is way more complex than pop music because of its structures and arrangements, which can result boring to some people.
