Ukrainian Marines crossed the mouth of the Dnipro two days ago. This is a real surprise, a reconnaissance in force perhaps?
As a test of Russian defences, it is telling. Russia's naval power clearly does not extend to Kherson, their radar could not detect these small boats that took the troops across and back.
Whatever the purpose of the patrol was it has exposed the Russian west flank as undefended. Whether or not Ukraine tries to establish some kind of bridgehead across the river, the knowledge that they are there and pushing will be a big concern for the Russian army that is already in disarray.
It was expected that Ukraine would pause or try to establish control over the bridges to the south. Russia has established most of its defences close to those crossing points. This new direction of advance will force them to spread their defences further west in fear of an amphibious crossing. The low sandbanks and estuary mud plains will be an unpleasant place to wait for winter.
I am so impressed by this move, it keeps Russian guessing. It maintains pressure on an army in retreat and allows them no pause.
Only Zelensky and his Generals know what the plan is. The future of the war is firmly in their hands.
Slava Ukraini!
