If Reed-Solomon correction was indeed perfect, it would mean that every superior
CD drive and every tweak, be it microphonic reducing feet, or solutions applied to the
CD itself, is totally imaginary, as Reed-Solomon error correction was and is always
perfect, all of the time. In other words, if you've improved the sound of your digital
drive or transport by any tweak of any nature, you are deluding yourself. Obviously this
kind of thinking is borne of closing their eyes and ears to new thought and technology
We feel it does all an injustice to ignore aspirants of higher knowledge who make proclamations
prematurely. This serves little purpose, save assuaged egos and exposing peripheral knowledge.
In truth, the technically aware are half correct. Reed-Solomon codes CAN be designed for 100%
efficacy. Or they can be designed to reach a lesser efficacy but use less room on the CD.
The latter is the case on the MUSIC CD. Reed-Solomon error correction on the PROGRAM CD is
indeed strong enough for 100% efficacy. But Reed-Solomon error correction on the MUSIC CD is
not. The code requires 50% of the space on a CD for 100% correction. On the PROGRAM CD,
this IS the case. On the MUSIC CD, only 33% of the CD has Reed-Solomon codes (known as
symbols).
The 33% compromise on the MUSIC CD was put in effect by Sony, at Phillips behest,
to squeeze the entire Beethovens 9th Symphony by Furtwangler on a single disc.
However, a CD with a PROGRAM on it would crash a computer with this much error
allowed. The errors were allowed under the verbal umbrella of being considered
inaudible, and the relaxed codes manifest themselves as timing errors or, once
converted to analog, PHASE SHIFT.
The Reed-Solomon code on the MUSIC CD is known as RS255/233. On PROGRAM CDs its RS
255/255. If the second number is in the least lower than the first, phase shift will exist.
And in the case of the MUSIC CD, that phase shift can be as large as a FOOT at 5000hz.
It can be an inch. It can be perfect, or anything between, random and cacophonous. The
very reason vinyl survives to this day is primarily due to this error designed into the
Reed-Solomon code on the MUSIC CD and it's destruction of natural harmonics and
timbre that vinyl has always enjoyed.
A complete analysis report on this temporal error will be available in November 2009.
