FWIW:
Vinyl is quiet but not deep pitch black. If you bought a few of this campaign releases from the first few bars of Breathe, you will recognize BG remastered signature: deep velvelt bass, overwhelming details, big soundstage but nothing done over the board, a very polished and polite presentation.
Owners of the 30th anniversary will soon noticed that the high frequencies are back to their normal level on this pressing. This will become obvious on the intro of Time where your listening seat is not inside the clock and bells anymore! The sound is grainy in places (Time solo).
Great gig in the sky, wow! Piano and grinding Hammond that you can clearly follow from start to the end. Very detailed. Have you noticed how much of Rick Wright organ work has been standing from these remastered?
Funny thing with Money, details from Roger bass seems to surface out more upfront. Selfnote for next pass...
Us and them, the killer chorus part is neutral and it seems that the bass note are clearly sustained. Sax part is not buried as much in the mix as it is used to. Clearer than other version, not sure yet.
Brain damage and eclipse. Once again the listening seat has shifted, female vocal clearer. Nice.
This is a very good version of the album and probably with an overall better tonal balance than the 30th. Full of details as BG knows how to have them standing out from the mix. The overall feeling: more etheral than the 30th and as mentioned, very polished and polite version. Not your super audiophile demo test vinyl but a version that easily flows through from start to the end.
In comparision, the 30th (and the folklore surrounding it) is a more rock solid version but sibiliance at places could annoy some lissssssteners. I also feel that the guitar work of David G is more in your face than on the BG version. Like you sitting next to the amp tubes. Money solo grooves a lot on there! Any colour you like seems a tad punchier and more convincing than BG.
If you are looking for a casual copy of DSOTM then you can safely get the BG version. If you are looking for the ultimate version then you will have to consider other options.
