A large crowd has gathered in Hong Kong to thank the United States for passing a law supporting human rights and democracy in the territory.
Organizers say about 10,000 people attended the rally in a park on Hong Kong Island on Sunday.
Some were wearing masks of US President Donald Trump. The participants carried the American flag and sang the US national anthem before marching to the US Consulate General.
Although the pro-democracy camp scored a landslide victory in the district council elections on November 24, the government refuses to accept more requests.
These include allowing residents to vote in elections to choose the territory's chief executive.
A woman said the Hong Kong government's reactions will determine what happens next. She added that the only way of resolving the standoff is to introduce democratic elections.
No major clashes between protesters and police had occurred since November 19.
But police fired tear gas on Sunday after protesters went off the approved route and blocked streets in a busy area of the Kowloon Peninsula.
