Gjelder her også.

And in 1973, the Oklahoma senator, Fred Harris, invoked populism as an alternative to the do-gooder paternalism of many of his fellow liberals, warning that “you can’t appeal to black people and poor people … on the basis of their own self-interest and to everybody else” — i.e., the broad middle class — “on the basis of morality.”
In a statement representing pretty much the inverse of today’s liberals’ preoccupation with the minutiae of unconscious bias, workplace micro-aggressions, and exclusionary dating preferences, Harris concluded that populism’s people shouldn’t “have to love each other. … All they have to do is recognize their common interests.”

Yet these examples of progressive populism — and King’s theatrical retelling of the story of the original Populist movement itself — were in counterflow to the main current. As Thomas Frank argues in his new book The People, No: A Brief History of Anti-Populism, the 19th-century Populist Party’s egalitarian influence laid the ground for what Frank regards as the high point of American liberalism: the New Deal era. Thereafter, however, beginning in the 1950s, American liberals lost their identification with “the people,” transferring their allegiance to the specialized expertise of educated professionals.

In Frank’s assessment, this transition went hand in hand with new anxieties about the anti-intellectualism of the masses, with the evils of McCarthyism its supreme expression. “Intellectuals in the fifties were more respected and prosperous than ever,” Frank remarks, just as they “became targets of a spasm of manufactured hate that (as they saw it) had clouded the minds of the country’s lower orders.” By another cunning historical coincidence, this was also the moment when America’s official memory of its actual populist past came unstuck. A series of celebrated academic studies told the story of the People’s Party, but erroneously recast it as a paranoid, authoritarian, racist, conspiratorial, reactionary, and antisemitic sect: everything, in short, that educated liberals increasingly suspected the masses of still being.

    tillegg:

the woke, the real woke, nothing but the woke!

Speaking last weekend to the Trump zealots at the Conservative Political Action Conference, Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley did what all true Trumpians do: depict himself as a victim when in fact he was a perpetrator.

What happened, he asked the crowd, when he compelled his colleagues to consider overturning the votes of Arizona and Pennsylvania when Congress convened on January 6th to certify the election results? What happened when he cheered on the mob advancing on the Capitol?

Oh dear. Never mind that mob. Rather, he said, pay heed to the "woke mob" that had tried to "cancel me, censor me, expel me, shut me down."

But it’s Hawley’s distinctive role as canceler, not cancelee, that’s won him a line in the history books. For all of the right’s fulminations against "cancel culture," the act of cancellation that looms over all others is Donald Trump’s efforts to cancel the votes of the American electorate—not a cancellation of an individual, but of the nation, of our system of government, of the principle of majority rule (even if we interpret that rule in presidential elections to mean a majority in the Electoral College). No greater cancellation has ever been attempted in the history of American politics.

Hawley stands second only to Trump in the ranks of the election cancelers. He was the senator who joined a small band of far-right House members in demanding that Congress consider overturning the electoral votes of swing states that Joe Biden had carried; until he came forward, Congress was simply going to certify the voters’ verdict. Hawley was also the sole senator to demand a vote on certifying Pennsylvania when Congress reconvened after the insurrectionists had been expelled from the Capitol.

Absent even a scintilla of evidence that there was anything wrong in either the voting processes or the vote totals, Hawley moved to cancel the votes of millions of Arizonans and Pennsylvanians. In claiming that he was a victim of cancel culture rather than its archfiend, he is giving chutzpah a bad name.

    bør leses.

Smilarly, companies like Apple, where workers in the secretive Chinese complex that manufactures iPhones attracted global concern after a spate of suicides, just brought out a special edition $429 Black Unity Apple Watch that was marketed for Black History Month. Apple says: “The Black Unity Sport Band is inspired by the pan-African flag and made from soft, high-performance fluoroelastomer with a pin-and-tuck closure laser-etched with ‘Truth. Power. Solidarity.’” Where is the power or solidarity for the workers toiling in factories in China, one might wonder? Or for child workers in the Democratic Republic of Congo who toil and die in mines extracting raw materials like cobalt that are used in iPhones. One doesn’t hear anything about that kind of material injustice affecting the working class from the global south when corporations make their self-congratulatory PR statements around inclusion.

    […]

Nowhere is the new anti-racism embraced with more zeal than at elite universities. Smith College, where a liberal arts education will cost you around $78,000 a year, has become the most famous example lately. In the summer holidays of 2018, a black student at the school was eating lunch in a building that was meant to be closed when she was questioned by a campus security officer about what she was doing there. She saw this as an act of racial animus and went to social media with her concerns. The incident came to the attention of Smith’s president, Kathleen McCartney, who offered an immediate apology and reportedly suspended a janitor without even speaking to the workers involved.

The student allegedly wasn’t satisfied, and posted photographs, names and email addresses of Mark Patenaude, a long-time Smith College janitor who wasn’t even working at the time, and Jackie Blair, a cafeteria worker who wasn’t actually the one who called security, on Facebook, accusing them of “racist and cowardly acts”.

Blair, an older worker who has lupus, said her condition flared up as a result of the stress, and had to go to hospital. She got death threats, had her car vandalized, and had threatening notes placed in her mailbox saying things like “You don’t deserve to live” and “RACIST”.

Patenaude told the New York Times’s Michael Powell: “We used to joke: don’t let a rich student report you, because if you do, you’re gone.”

There’s nothing special here: a boss throws a worker under the bus to satisfy the angry customers (in this case wealthy students and donors) that keep her employed. The only unusual part is that instead of demanding due process for the workers and an investigation, grassroots sentiment at a progressive institution called for even more sweeping actions. Student groups staged walkouts, while a pressured administration shifted more and more attention to beleaguered employees, calling upon Blair to go into meditation with the student, what McCartney called “restorative justice”.

Months later, a 35-page report was issued on the incident, which cleared all workers of wrongdoing, yet those affected were issued no public apology from McCartney or anyone else at Smith. In fact, an even greater scrutiny was placed on their thoughts and behavior. As McCartney put it: “It is impossible to rule out the potential role of implicit racial bias.” As such, cafeteria workers and other staff were subjected to intrusive and humiliating educational sessions led by outside consultants, where they were forced to speak about their childhoods, their racial backgrounds, and their political and social beliefs. It’s a high price to pay to serve rich kids food.
