Har ingen plate med Wolf-liedere fra før, så da denne dukket opp under nesen på meg i dag så bare måtte jeg ha den. Og jeg tror det var et godt valg. YouTube er kjekt å ha noen ganger, og slike forsmaker som dette burde flere kostet på seg. Nå gleder jeg meg til roen faller litt mer på plass, men jeg skal gi den en kjapp gjennomlytt mens jeg holder på med andre ting nå.

ADIKA PONGO, one of the leading bands on the European and Italian Soul scene, have been grooving audiences since 1993, combining original songs with enticing cover versions of major funk/soul/disco hits. Careful listeners can trace elements in the ADIKA PONGO sound to fundamental music roots from the 70s and 80s, muich like Incognito and The Sunburst Band, but Adika Pongo really has a style of its own that is guaranteed to get feet moving. This band is absolutely amazing! said Lionel Ritchie, after having performed with them in 2004. Riding the wave of their success with live performances, Adika Pongo s first CD comes out with us here at Expansion featuring songs first laid down in 1997, as well as new tracks recorded with their current lead vocalist Francy. Among the guest artists, a special mention goes to Norma Jean Wright and Luci Martin (ex vocalists of the remarkable band Chic), Robbie Dupree (nominated for Grammys and twice in the Top Ten on Billboard) and Steve Khan (known for his numerous solo projects and his work with Steely Dan, Weather Report, Brecker Brothers, Dianne Schuur, Donald Fagen et al). Some songs are sung by Baruch "Darling" Chadwick, one of the first solo vocalists to perform with Adika Pongo, who unfortunately died prematurely in 2004. Two songs on the new CD feature a duet with Francy and are a tribute to him. Two songs from this album, Chill Out and The Look In You Eye , have just been released on the soul compilation "Luxury Soul 2011" by the Expansion Records. This album was recorded between Rome and New York City. The 1997 s songs were mixed by Michael Landy at the Review Room at GRP in New York. In 2006 ADIKA PONGO performed at the Disco Fever 2006 at the Pavilhao Atlantico in Lisbon, Portugal, an annual event dedicated to disco music, which featured also Kool & Gang. In 2004-2005, ADIKA PONGO have created and performed in the Big Party Live Show , a show which featured also dancers and a sensational string section. In 2000, the band also released a new version of the Tom Tom Club hit Wordy Rappinghood for the label New Music International.

Although the name may not be recognisable, some of the band members will be very familiar to fans of sophisticated melodic rock. The Strand s origins can be found in a group called Rural Still Life, the very same group that spawned hugely successful multi Grammy winning West Coast AOR stars Toto. In common with Toto the band were also extremely talented players, some having backed Boz Scaggs both live and in the studio. Just like the session players that birthed Toto, they too hatched plans for their own group, quickly securing a deal with Island Records. Signed personally by Island founder Chris Blackwell (and named by him), the band s one and only album, originally released in1980, was produced, not unsurprisingly, by long time friend and colleague, Toto drummer Jeff Porcaro. The results, as you might reasonably expect, are spectacular, boasting killer songs, jaw-dropping musicianship and superb arrangements, all bathed in a stellar production. Listen out too for vocalist Rick Moon Calhoun, one of the greatest, yet largely overlooked, vocalists of the genre.

Viktoria Tolstoy - Letters to Herbie [ACT 9519-2]



Herbie Hancock is without doubt one of the few remaining greats of jazz as a pianist and composer. Of late he has been playing jazz, rock and pop standards with a number of prominent guests - on Possibilities"" (2005) and most recently on ""The Imagine Project"" he joined up with global stars like Santana, Sting, Christina Aguilera and Pink to perform a range of popular classics. Now the tables have turned, and rather than Herbie covering the music of other artists, a fan of the 71-year-old has written a series of musical ""Letters to Herbie"" - ACT´s star Viktoria Tolstoy has recorded 12 songs for (and in most cases by) Herbie Hancock. With ""Letters to Herbie"" Tolstoy was faced with a tough choice. ""It was not easy to select 12 out of the huge amount of songs, but I just listened to my heart."" Her smart decision was not to pick the biggest hits, such as ""Cantaloupe Island"" or ""Watermelon Man"", which have already been covered too often. Her choice of songs fits together perfectly, although the selection covers Hancock´s different musical eras. The focus is largely on the songs of his funky `80s era, with selections such as ""I Thought It Was You"" or ""Give It All Your Heart"", but classics are also included Hancock´s ""Butterfly"" or Coltrane´s ""Naima"", of which Hancock recorded a thrilling version in 2002. Whether its ballads like ""Chan´s Song"", or groovy pieces like the bonus track ""Come On, Come Over"", Tolstoy´s versions sound timeless, neither artificial nor deliberately, ostentatiously modern. All of them are carried by Viktoria´s voice, which gives the music a special touch with its incredible clarity and imaginativeness. The overall effect also has a lot to do with the wonderfully attuned band, particularly Nils Landgren. As well as producing the album and playing the trombone, he wrote the title song himself and sings it with Tolstoy and Magnus Lindgren, telling the story of Viktoria´s encounter with Hancock. Tolstoy´s longstanding pianist, Jacob Karlzon, accepts the challenge of taking the seat of the master and convinces with impressive solos on piano and a variety of tones and colours on keyboard and Fender Rhodes, while Matthias Svensson on bass and Rasmus Kihlberg on drums provide the silky, groovy rhythms. Krister Johnsson´s guitar is strongly influenced by soul music, occasionally evoking George Benson (but not forgetting the funky wah-wah-pedal), and the impressive brass sections were played and arranged by Magnus Lindgren.

The Band - Stage Fright [UDSACD 2048]



A sharp stylistic and thematic detour away from its first two albums, the Band’s Stage Fright is a compelling snapshot of a group coping with massive success and internal changes. Recorded in 1970 at the Woodstock Playhouse, the set shivers with raw emotions, dark confessionals, and intense singing. Largely devoid of the quintet’s trademark all-for-one harmony vocals, Stage Fright is an utterly distinctive piece of the Band’s catalog—and a historic landmark that’s a necessary part of any music collection.

Such splintered camaraderie and personal demons appear in now-famous songs such as the title track, “The Shape I’m In,” and “The W.S. Walcott Medicine Show.” The music is rife with palpable tension, and as a credit to the Band’s unique sound, absolutely singular. It’s impossible to think of any other group playing these tunes. Robertson’s balladic ode to his daughter, “All La Glory,” featuring a gorgeous vocal turn from Levon Helm, provides a sunny contrast to the darker compositions.
