Al Jarreau - L Is For Lover [The Deluxe Edition FRM 25477]





L Is For Lover as Al Jarreau recently described to us is one of those albums that his international audience knows every song, the track order, the lyrics, who played on the album, etc. In other words, this 1986 masterwork is truly a fan favorite.

This Nile Rodgers (David Bowie, Chic, Madonna) produced gem included some very incredibly strong material with hits like Tell Me What I Gotta Do, L Is For Lover and stellar album cuts like Johnathan Butler's Give A Little More Lovin' and Al Jarreau's own Says and the jazz groover Across The Midnight Sky.

You can also see why the fans agree that this is a very special album from Al Jarreau as it includes world class musicians like Nile Rodgers, Steve Ferrone, Anthony Jackson, Hiram Bullock, Lisa Fischer and Phillip Saisse.

It is with much honor to announce another installment in the extensive Al Jarreau Remaster Series here at Friday Music with his smash album L Is For Lover/The Deluxe Edition. Remastered from the original Warner Bros. tapes by Joe Reagoso (Al Jarreau/Patti Austin/Boz Scaggs/George Benson), this wonderful release is now supplemented with new interview notes from Al Jarreau as well as three great bonus tracks including his #1 smash single Moonlighting from the great ABC Television series from the eighties, which of course starred Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd.

We have also included the original artwork elements from the vinyl release to make this even a more enjoyable and frequent revisit to your favorite music and memories of this Al Jarreau classic. L Is For Lover/The Deluxe Edition available exclusively on Friday Music. Enjoy!

One of the best albums of the year is here, perfectly timed with the arrival of the Scandinavian Spring Sun. Norwegian guy OLE BÖRUD has previously released two solo albums, and they're both high class releases. The first one was "Chi-rho" (Master Music, 2002), delivering melodic pop/rock cover songs with one foot in the modern way of producing them, while still remaining with the other foot in the world of AOR. It contained songs by the likes of WHITE HEART, PFR and others, performed in a flawless way. However, Ole then headed for self-made songs and turned into the soul/funk and westcoast style with his follow-up "Shakin' The Ground" (OBM records, 2008). The album was absolutely one of the best ones in this genre to see the light of day in the past few years... I've also been told he's got a metal band that's supposed to be great - it seems this Norwegian can handle any kind of music... And this new "Keep Movin" album might be his best to date.

So, what have got here then? Well, anyone into EARTH WIND & FIRE, TOWER OF POWER, DAVID FOSTER and PAGES can enter alert stage 1! OLE BÖRUD is what you all need. He's got it all: one of the best voices in the circuit, fantastic songs and arrangements - and then a 10-man band to back him up live! Some of them are involved on the album as well. The EARTH, WIND & FIRE vibes are imminent in songs like "Keep Movin" and "Make A Change". Same goes for the opener "High Time", which would also have made it to any TOWER OF POWER record. Also check out "Souls In Chains", with a simply marvellous 7/4 part with incredible horns and cool vocals in complex backbeat (well, I'm sure someone more musically educated than I, can tell it's not simply 7/4 - however that's the main beat anyway). The guitar and pass picking in the verse is nicely executed and shows the wide variation that Börud presents in his arrangements. It's absolutely one of the best tracks on this CD, although it's hard to pick. This song gives you westcoast and fusion in one and the same song.

And how about westcoast? Sure, even though this is not a westcoast album in the normal sense - it has got a few true westcoast masterpieces. One is "Broken People", and you hear it right away in the intro. Lots of PAGES here! It all gets so vivid too, when you get real instruments all the way on an album like this one. The horn section alone makes such a difference! It's magic! This is like hearing PAGES á la 2011, and you get weak at the knees. The harmony vocals (and the arrangements of them) are so smooth! They're signed and delivered by... well, Ole himself of course. There's also plenty of westcoast vibes in "Make A Change", added soul/funk in a nice mix. "She's Like No Other" is Ole's tribute to his mother, and it's a soul/westcoast tune somewhere in the neighborhood of GINO VANNELLI, PAGES and EDIN/ÅDAHL. The only major problem with this CD is: I have so many other albums to review, but it's hard to put this one aside. Being a westcoast fan, the only thing I'd wish for would be that the next Ole Börud recording will be a true westcoast album all the way through. It could be even better than the STATE COWS album (talking stylewise and songwise; the production and sound would probably beat State Cows by far). Did I mention Börud is also producing the "Keep Movin" album himself? And in a very dynamic way, too.

As if this wouldn't be enough #1: Some people just have it all. There are a couple of guitar solos by Ole, that both JAY GRAYDON and TIM PIERCE or DANN HUFF would have been proud of. How does he do it? One fine example is the slol in the final song "Resting Day"; another PAGES influenced tune where I also think of NIELSEN/PEARSON's self-titled album.

As if this wouldn't be enough #2: I mentioned the 10 man band backing up Ole Börud live. Well, I watched and heard them on 5 April 2011 in Stockholm. It was the best concert I have ever seen and heard live! The songs get another dimension, and it was such a flawless performance it had me almost knocked down. Take ANY chance you might get to attend to an OLE BÖRUD concert. You will be amazed.

Joseph Williams was the lead vocalist with Toto during the mid-to-late 1980s (“Fahrenheit”, 1986 and “The Seventh One” – 1988). Lars-Erik Dahle har kommet med litt info bak siste plata til Ole Børud:

I fjor høst ble jeg oppringt av Ole Børud og spurt om jeg kunne sette av en helg til innspilling av noen låter til hans nye plate. Jeg har spilt med Ole i snart ni år, men det er fortsatt en glede hver gang han ringer, og spesielt når det gjelder innspilling. På den forrige plata (Shaking the Ground) fikk jeg lov til å spille på ni låter, mens Ole selv på synthbass og David Fjelde på Yamaha 5-strenger tok seg av de resterende tre på en utmerket måte. Denne gangen hadde Ole kokkelert i studio og spilt på sin egen P-bass på de fleste låtene, men han ønsket å ha med meg på fem av elleve låter. Topp stemning.

Jeg heiv alle bassene mine og meg selv i bilen og durte av gårde til Stavern. Vi hadde satt av tre dager, men endte opp med å bruke bare en kveld. Låtene var mye mer ferdige på det tidspunktet jeg kom inn i prosessen denne gangen, og i motsetning til forrige runde, jobbet vi stort sett i hele takes fra første til siste takt, slik at vi begge fikk et mer helhetlig bilde av dynamikken og progresjonen i låtene. Litt om hver låt:

Resting Day

Dette er Oles hyllest til Donald Fagen. Den minner meg spesielt om “The Great Pagoda of Funn” fra Fagens siste soloplate. Da jeg spilte den inn, hadde Ole allerede begynt å jobbe med den Wayne Krantz-inspirerte gitarsoloen. Det låt bra da, og det ferdige resultatet låter enda bedre. Jeg brukte min ’65 P-bass og prøvde å komme inn i Freddy Washington-modus. Akkordskjemaet var fastlagt, og det var bare å fylle inn tomrommene her og der, og lage en slags lang basslinje gjennom låten. Vi spilte gjennom låten 4-5 ganger før vi landet på et take vi begge var fornøyde med. Det var spesielt gøy å spille smooth R&B-bass under soloen.

Rock Steady

Her måtte jeg ta fram slap-bassen min, en (en gang) melkehvit ’75 Fender Jazz med Seymour Duncan-pickuper. Bassfiguren var ferdig komponert av Ole, og jeg kunne bare spille låten slik han ville høre den, med noen få små personline innstikk her og der. Typisk Ole-låt med unislinje i bass og gitar på refrenget. Jeg digger Frodes keyboardspilling på denne låten, spesielt Harlan Rogers-partiet midt i broa.

Broken People

Kanskje den mest intrikate låten på plata, både rytmisk og harmonisk. Her var det igjen Jazzbassen som fikk kjørt seg, uttrykket matcher bra med “One More Try” fra forrige plate. Selv om Oles ferdigkomponerte basslinje i utgangspunktet var ganske intensiv, var det muligheter for litt filling og personlig touch her og der. Fantastisk solo av Markus Lillehaug Johnsen på denne.

She’s Like no Other

En litt atypisk Ole-låt, med kassegitar og midtempo-groove. De fire år gamle strengene på P-bassen kom til sin rett her, og vi landa på et uttrykk litt i Al Green-land. Vi eksperimenterte med korte og lange toner i verset, og landet på korte for å gi litt mer sprett og skyv. Her var det også muligheter for å trekke fram noen old-school R&B-triks, til stor glede for bassisten. Kjempelåt, og en oppriktig og fortjent hyllest til Anne-Marie.

Make a Change

Jeg har en ’86 Yamaha BB5000 5-strenger som jeg svært sjelden tar fram, men den måtte til pers i denne låta. Unis-linja på refrenget strekker seg ned til Db på H-strengen. En nokså intrikat og litt finurlig linje som krevde litt konsentrasjon for å føles og høres naturlig ut. Så å si ferdig komponert, men bassfillet i andre vers var en øyeblikksoppfinnelse. Jeg var lenge litt ukomfortabel med basslyden på denne låta, sikkert fordi jeg er uvant med Yamaha-bassen, men i siste miks og master satte den seg veldig fint. Fantastisk gitarsolo av Ole.

Jeg er stolt over å ha vært med på en så solid plate, og nå som releaserunden er i gang og tilbakemeldingene begynner å komme, blir jeg stoltere og stoltere. Alle gutta har gjort en kjempejobb, og jeg gleder meg til å spille dette materialet live de neste årene.
