Valerie Carter - Wild Child [SRCS 6358]
Wild child, Valerie Carter's 1978 follow-up to her debut Just a stone throw's away, was clearly designed to broaden whatever audience she may have had gained in the prior year. Really, she didn't make that big of an impact in 1978 the debut peaked at 1982 and spent five weeks on the chart without generating a single hit but it was enough to hold out the possibility that she could go further. So James Newton Howard signed on as the producer, bringing in top-flight studio musicians like Jeffrey Porcaro and Jay Graydon to perform a set of songs from various sources ranging from songs Carter co-wrote with Newton Howard to covers of Andy Fairweather Low and Eugene Record. The result was a pleasant soft-rock affair with light disco touches and jazzy flourishes, but it failed to even chart and Carter soon disappeared from sight. In hindsight, it's not a huge surprise since Wild child is hardly a lost gem and nothing on the record sounds remotely like a hit. They all could have been played on radio, sure, with their smooth productions and endearingly laid-back vibe, but there's not many hooks and Carter isn't an especially charismatic vocalist, no matter how professional and, well, pleasant she may be. As it turns out, Wild child isn't wild, it's a period piece that has its moments for aficionados of the era (Lady in the dark is especially good, with its harder-rocking edge), but it never transcends its time, except for the most hardcore soft-rock collectors. (Stephen Thomas Erlewine)

mezzoforte recording new album in Reykjavik, Iceland
29.08.2011 19:59:01
we are in the studio in reykajvik right now working on new songs... it's big fun!!!!!!
We met in a nice studio just next to the harbour in Reykjavik. The approach is much more acoustic as usual. A lot of grand-piano and rhodes, acoustic bass, jazzy guitar...
In the city you had to watch out for yourself
And rely on the help from nobody else
It was a cold, dark and lonely place
Far from the green embrace
Down the street your hab looked over the scene
Where the mobsters carried out their silent routine
It was a cold, dark and lonely place
Far from the green embrace
Its a hard goodbye
When youve lost what you thought you knew
Janey, please reply
Was there something I could have done for you
Now the lights dont shine from your window no more
Theres debris and rubble lying on the floor
In this cold, dark and lonely place
Far from the green embrace
Its a hard goodbye
When youve lost what you thought you knew
Janey, please reply
Was there something I could have done for you

Denmark born, Iceland raised keyboardist Jakob Frimann Magnússon moved to London in early 70's and Jacob formed the band "Empire" with Peter Banks, the original Yes guitarist in 1974 and then he played keyboards for Kevin Ayers's 1975 album "Sweet Deceiver". In 1979, Jacob found himself as a solo recording artist for Warner Bros, USA. This is the album released in 1979 produced produced by Henry Lewy, featuring Carlos Rios (guitar), Richard Elliot (sax), Tom Scott (sax), Gary Herbig (sax), Jerry hey (trumpet), Bill Champlin (background vocals), Venette Gloud (background vocals) and Carmen Twille (background vocals). We could see the comment on the sticker with this album as follows; "A First! The album you have in your hands is really only Jakob Magnusson's FIRST RECORD! But it's as seasoned as any fusion effort out there. It's a sophisticated, expertly-played marriage of jazz and rock, featuring Jeff Baxter, Michal Urbaniak, Ernie Watts, and Jokob's own hot young band.". You should note that this album is a fusion album even though you found Bill Champlin's name. As you may know, Jacob suddenly released a vocal-oritend masterpiece album "Jack Magnet" in 1981, which was only released in Sweden at that time Then, Jakob released another leader album "Time Zone" in 1986 for Golden Boy Jazz in the States, which was an instrumental fusion album. After all, Jacob Magnússon participated in the project with Ragnhildur Gísladóttir (aka Ragga), Icelandic internationally known to the audience as a singer and actress. When the project ended up in London, it is said that Magnusson worked as Icelandic cultural attache while Ragga attended drama school. Later, they formed Ragga & The Jack Magic Orchestra with Mark Davies, English sampling wizard . In 1997, their debut album was released for EMI Records, UK. Meanwhile, Jakob Magnússon was appointed Cultural Attaché of the Icelandic Embassy in London 1991-1995. He founded the Green Army in 1999, an initiative for the embellishment of Iceland. At present he is owner of the advertisement company "Bankastraeti" and works also for "Reykjavik Records". In 2006, Jacob completed an instrumental jazz album titled "Piano" only released in Iceland.

Roby Duke, one of the best CCM singer in 80's, was born in Mississippi on December 6, 1956. Roby moved to Nashville for seeking the possibility as professional singer / songwriter around 1976, but not successful. In 1978, Roby moved to Los Angeles for another possibility, and as the result he could get a deal with Songbird, MCA Christian division. Thus, his 1st album "Not The Same" was released in 1982. However, due to the close of business of Songbird label (MCA), Roby had to find out other label in spite of a little success of his 1st album. The new label was Good News Records, established by Freddy Piro, known as the producer of Ambrosia and distributed by Word/Epic, which released Roby's followed 4 albums "Come Let Us The Reason" (1984), "Blue Eyed Soul" (1986), "Down To Business" (1989) and "Bridge Divine" (1994).
"Come Let Us The Reason" is of the highest quality, not less than "Not The Same". Personally, I believe "Come Let Us The Reason" is much better ! When you listen to Dann Huff's exciting guitar performance and Richard Page & Steve George's backing up vocals, you will agree with me. "Come Let Us The Reason" is one of the long-awaited to be reissued albums on CD and would like to send my sincere gratitude to Toshi Nakada, Cool Sound Inc.
You may also have a chance to get hard-to-find CD releases, i.e. "Blue Eyed Soul" (1986), "Down To Business" (1989) now. If you listen to "Blue Eyed Soul" first time, you may be a little surprised because this album is a little too electric alike Go West in those days. Comparing with "Blue Eyed Soul", Roby sings naturally on "Down To Business" (1989). For your information, Roby is now living in Seattle and producing CCM and do business related to Musical Computer Software "Spectrasonic" which is used for vocal production of the famous movies such as "Titanic" and "Matrix".

Pages, the one of the best AOR group cannot be forgotten among us. In 1977, Pages released their debut single "I Get It From You" c/w "If I Saw You Again" produced by Bobby Colomby. And their first album "Pages"(Original Vinyl: Epic, USA 35459, Reissued CD: Epic Europe 475861 2 <1994>) was followed. Their highly sophisticated jazz-influenced progressive rock music with Westcoast harmonies was as remarkable as Steely Dan in late 70's. The original members of the group were as below:
Richard Page: Vocals, Guitars, Keyboards
Steve George: Keyboards, Vocals
Peter Rainhazer: Guitars
Jerry Manfredi: Bass
Russ Battelene: Drums
In 1979, Pages released the excellent second album "Future Street" (Original Vinyl: Epic USA 36209, Reissued CD: Epic Sony, Japan ESCA5888 <1991>) including their masterpiece tune "Who's Right, Who's Wrong". You can find Charles Icarus Johnson as the guitarist of Pages replacing Peter Rainhazer and George Lawrence joined as a new drummer on this album. Although both of Epic albums were really excellent, they were underestimated.
Sometimes coincidences collide and the story of how an album came about turns out to be almost as good as the album itself. Charlotte Berg & Dea Norberg met while attending a music school in Skåne, located in the Southern parts of Sweden. After leaving school they both relocated to Stockholm. It just so happened that American songwriter and producer Brian Hobbs arrived early one evening at Jazzclub Fasching in Stockholm to hear an artist perform one of his songs. While waiting for the gig to start, sitting alone at his table near the stage, a lady and two young women asked if they could join in. This turned out to be Dea´s mother, Dea and Charlotte .They started talking and once realizing they were sharing a table with a songwriter and producer, Dea´s mother mentioned that the two girls were fantastic singers. Ever the polite gentleman, Hobbs gave the two young women his contact info. About a week later, Hobb´s got a cassette from the two girls he met at Fasching. He was so impressed that he immediately set up meetings to work on songwriting and demos. Eventually a small company heard the tracks and wanted to do an album for the Japanese market. One of the demo tracks, Thats The Chance We Take landed on a Japanese compilation album.
The entire album took almost five years to record and was completed in 1999. Due to some unforeseen circumstances, the album never got theattention it deserved.
What strikes me when listening to this album is how strong the songwriting is and how well the lyrics rhythmically fit into the pace of the song. This together with great arrangements and instrumentation makes hearing it so refreshing. And when you add Charlotte & Dea´s well blended passionated voices to this formula, all you can do is surrender and let the music embrace you. One interesting aspect regarding the vocals is that they were cut at the same time, with Charlotte & Dea on two mics facing each other. Recorded on ADAT there were basically no editing on the vocals. So that might explain the true live feel you experience as a listener. Style wise, the album its a mix of pop/singer songwriter with strains of country feel & even some folk. I can really hear some Wilson Phillips vibe in the air. Ive had a hard time picking a favourite track since I happen to like them all, but the uptempo That´s The Chance We Take has a really great hook. Then we have Eidolon with its beautiful dreamlike melody. And, how about Alabaster Night with that cool rhythm guitar figure. The closing track Why? holds a beautiful string arrangement by Hobbs and great piano played by Anders Widmark.
Dont be scared by the fact that youve probably never heard of this album. Do you want to lay your hands on a true diamond in the rough? Would you like to hear some new music and be amazed by a female duo that deserves everyones attention? Well then, heres your chance to get ahold of an album thats a hidden gem and a true labour of love.
Ahhh, Gino Vannelli!

Frontiers Records is pleased to announce the signing to the label of a brand new Artist SONIC STATION for the release of their self titled debut album on February 24th 2012 in Europe and February 28th in North America.
SONIC STATION is a new Westcoast-AOR Project put together by Alexander Kronbrink (a Swedish guitarist, composer and producer). Alexander is a young musician who learned his skills playing with Smooth Jazz star Jonathan Fritzén. Later on after being introduced to Lee Ritenour - Alexander started to see a clearer direction in his playing. Through Ritenour he discovered the music of such giants as Steely Dan, Kenny Loggins, composer and producer David Foster and guitarist Jay Graydon, among others. Alexander says: I have always been interested in guitarists with the ability to play everything from Jazz, to Pop, to Country, to Hard Rock. I have listened a lot to American session guitarists such as Steve Lukather, Michael Landau and Dan Huff. I guess that type of guitar playing is what have influenced me the most.
From the very beginning the SONIC STATION project has been based in the 80s AOR music (influenced by Toto, Mr. Mister and Journey) and the West Coast-sound of Airplay and Chicago. The resulting album SONIC STATION is an expressive and warm record, where each song has an obvious and immediate hit feeling. The focus is on melody and the SONIC STATION sound is a meticulous and exciting mixture of Pop, Rock and Jazz, explains Kronbrink. To get the most quality out of each track Alexander, who composed ten of the songs and also produced and arranged the whole record, engaged four singers with different styles and voices: Marika Willstedt (from the Swedish TV show Så ska det låta), Magnus Bäcklund (member of the Swedish duo Fame), Kristoffer Fogelmark and Tove Lo.
There are many musicians working on the album but the three contributing the most are Alexanders close friends Jonathan Fritzén (on keyboards a smooth Jazz solo artist who reached #1 on the Billboard Indicator Smooth Jazz Chart), Henrik Linder (on bass Dirty Loops, Work of Art) and Aron Mellergård (on drums Dirty Loops). All of them are accomplished musicians and gave their contribution for the final result. I definitely think SONIC STATION will have a life on stage and I expect that we will be able to do some shows in the coming months concludes Alexander Kronbrink.
Sonic Station includes the following songs: Intro; Love's Gonna Show The Way (Feat. Magnus Bäcklund); I Wish I Could Lie (Feat. Marika Willstedt); Hold On To Me (Feat. Kristoffer Fogelmark); You Have To Let Me Go (Feat. Tove Lo); The Most Beautiful Fear (Feat. Magnus Bäcklund); Running Through The Night (Feat. Marika Willstedt); Never Let The Sunshine Die (Feat. Kristoffer Fogelmark); My Last Refrain (Feat. Marika Willstedt); Love You More (Feat. Marika Willstedt & Kristoffer Fogelmark); Reasons (Feat. Marika Willstedt)
With SONIC STATION, Alexander Kronbrink has taken the 80s into the future.
