A very, very, good man.
Joe Biden has not been ‘ousted’ or ‘removed’ as some journalists would have us believe. He has been persuaded by those who care about him, as much as they do the USA, that his time as leader of the free world must come to an end in January 2025.
His experience and wisdom are no longer enough to compensate for the lack of stamina and acuity that age forces upon us all. No reasonable person witnessing his frailty could imagine him lasting another four years. We have all witnessed the acceleration of aging that the crown of democratic power inflicts on its wearers.
Joe Biden realised he must stand aside for the good of his nation and his party. Rocky could not manage another sequel.
However, the show is not yet over. Biden has six months to concentrate on rebuilding the USA and returning it to its pre-Trump, pre-Covid standards of success. Without the pressures of the election campaign Biden can continue to increase jobs, reduce inflation, improve medical services, forgive student debt and give women back the right to decide what is appropriate for their bodies.
Biden is a man who has worked for people throughout his political career. He has set an example of decency and honour for his entire life. He was a wonderful supporter and guide to Barak Obama as vice president. During Obama’s tenure there was a genuine spirit of joy and hope that emanated from the Whitehouse. The gentle jog to the oval office with his boss was a daily routine that showed unity and energy.
The wisdom is still there, the will to fight is still there, but the stamina is failing. This is a man who continues to give everything and take nothing. The courage and personal strength that stepping aside for a younger leader takes, will be remembered in history as the ultimate example of doing the right thing.
It takes immense strength of character to give up power, to trust younger people and hand the decisions for the future over to them. He will retire undefeated.
I look forward to the coming six months, the circus of Trumpymania will have to confront Kamala Harris, Mark Kelly, Wes Moore, Josh Shapiro and Gretchen Whitmer. I would like to see other combatants take the fight to MAGA. Jared Moskowitz, Jasmine Crockett and many other young top democrats who have youth, experience, and stamina on their sides are fierce opponents who will take no prisoners. Ready and trained to take on the great orange butterbean, future debate against them is going to be interesting to observe.
When 2025 comes, whatever the result, Joe Biden will be remembered as the man who rebuilt the USA after Covid, who restored confidence in NATO, who supported Ukraine, who loved his country so much he was prepared to come out of retirement and give up his final years to save it. A superb example for those who value freedom.
A very, very, good man.
