Squeeze Server Very Slow on Duo
by johnbowe » Fri May 28, 2010 5:20 pm
I've just bought a Netgear Ready NAS Duo for the soul purpose of a music server for my Squeeze Box Radio. Proir to this I've been running the Squeeze Server software on my PC and it woks great, but like many others I thought it would be more energy saving not to have the PC on all the time. I updated the Squeeze Box Server software on the Duo to the most recent version (same as my PC), when I started scanning my music tracks - just over 4,000 it took 1hr 9mins to scan, on my PC the exact same amount of music took 4mins 37s - a big discrepancy.
Moving files to and from the Duo works perfect and at a speed I'd expect, so I don't think there is any fault there, so I think the problem lies in the Squeeze Server software running on the Duo. Equally clicking on the album button takes about 50s before anything appears and the same if you then clicked on the artists button. Generally I find this very impractical to use having used it on my PC with great success.
My question to anyone reading this, is my experience of the Squeeze Server software on the Duo as expected or is there a fault with my Duo? As the unit stands at the moment it's of no practical use - it's too slow to use and even though I read such good reviews of this product I'm thinking of returning it.
Look forward to reading any comments about my problem.

I have found exactly the same. I've seen several people comment that scanning and the web UI are very slow but have no problems using the controller (I have a Duet). This is certainly not what I have found, the controller is unusable, up to 60 seconds to react to anything. I have upgraded the Duo's memory to 1GB, tried using the beta server all with no improvement.
The music itself streams perfectly OK, it's just that if you want to change album you could almost make a cuppa in the time it takes to react. It's very disappointing but I wanted network storage for more than just Squeezeserver so I am toying with the idea of keeping my music on the Duo and running the server on a Sheevaplug (Squeezeplug).StuHolmes

But for setting up things it is ok. Hey, that DUO was made for file storage/handling and that does it pretty well, although in that area it is not a speed monster.
The Sqeezeserver web interface running from my 2.2 Gig dual core PC works fine.Pjotr

Well, after speaking to logitech and reading several posts the conlusion is only one: Readynas Duo + squeezebox don't work properly without the help of a computer. Basically, the duo is not powerful enough to handle the squeezebox. Arrrr I have already lost so much time/money and no result.hugom
